Not being entirely familiar with the sasl system, I found I needed
saslauthd. Turns out this lives in the sasl2-bin package.

Usually when I use apt-cache search <name-of-program> I get the
appropriate results. As I often see results that do not mention my
searchterm, I think there is an area where apt-cache also searches, that
could mention in this case saslauthd, to allow me (but especially others
having the same problem :-) ) to find it with the obvious search....
