You have been subscribed to a public bug:

apt: 0.7.9ubuntu16
8.04

New user, two installs of heron with cd to clean hds.

Both installs encountered dns configuration issues after install.
Scenario: user boots, apps access internet for 2-3 minutes, then sit
idle (read email, page, updates, etc.). If no routing requests extend
outside of network, dns records are not retained. Local network
locations are still routable, ping works, but no app can get DNS. To
get out, dhcp release/renew is required.

I was able to research the issue and thanks to handy's post of Oct 17
2006 <http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1629946&postcount=3> the
issue was discovered in the dhclient.conf. First, I edited prepend
domain-name-servers and added my two dns entries. Then I changed the
about:config value of IPv6 to false per Handy. Bingo, done. I'd looked
for this solution about a week.

Is there some reason the DNS info is not automatiicaly prepended to the
dhclient.conf file by default? Or if it is supposed to, is this a bug
over two installs? This happened with two different NICs on a Linksys
WRT54GL using standard firmware while accessing an Earthlink powered by
Comcast cable account. Yeah, maybe cheap routers matter, but imho the
dns info should be retained for more than 2-3 minutes of idle time.

Thanks for your attention,

Neal
