I can't reproduce that.

>From a amd64 UEC 20091019.1 setup with amd64 20091019 UEC image:
$ . eucarc
$ euca-run-instances -k mykey emi-407D125C -t c1.medium
$ euca-create-volume -s 1 -z vcl
$ euca-attach-volume -i i-43440758 -d sdb vol-32DF04AE
$ euca-describe-volumes
VOLUME	vol-32DF04AE	 1		vcl	in-use	2009-10-20T07:33:18.216Z
ATTACHMENT	vol-32DF04AE	i-43440758	unknown,requested:sdb	2009-10-20T07:36:13.018Z
