Thanks for posting the daemon log file. According to the log file there
was already something running on port the first two tries:

Oct 23 19:11:48 pathfinder mysqld[3163]: 091023 19:11:48 [ERROR] Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: Address already in use
Oct 23 19:11:48 pathfinder mysqld[3163]: 091023 19:11:48 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?

Was there anything already running on port 3306? Was the network up and
running correctly at the time package installation?

Also it seems that mysql correctly started later on. Is mysql running
correctly now?
