libvirt was not changed (libvirt-bin 0.7.5-5ubuntu25) , I meant to refer to a system upgrade done yesterday 2010-04-20 ( thru  update-manager). There were other other updates, including udev. 
I noted that udev upgrade (to 151-12 ) was blocked during configuration (post install script, at "restart udev" ); I had to kill the postinstall script (that was happily almost completed) .

May be the problem is udev related? The strange thing is that the
segfault occurs inside libc ...
