I just tested the latest lucid-desktop live CD with -vga vmware on a
lucid host, and it works fine.  Host has:

$ apt-cache policy qemu-kvm
qemu-kvm:
  Installed: 0.12.2-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.12.2-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.12.2-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com lucid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
