This seems to be fixed on Lucid alpha 3:

$ qemu -cpu pentium  lucid.qcow2 
kvm_run: Exec format error
kvm_run returned -8
$ qemu -cpu 486  lucid.qcow2 
kvm_run: Exec format error
kvm_run returned -8
$ qemu -cpu pentium -no-kvm lucid.qcow2 

(runs, slowly)
