I get the same result with the natty qemu-kvm version installed on
maverick.

However, with the current upstream version (from 
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-server-edgers/+archive/server-edgers-qemu-kvm)
the mouse works just fine.  I'll look through the delta to hopefully find the patch
which fixed it.
