Ok, found a fix... I don't think it's particularly elegant (reminds me
of Windows), but it seems to have worked...

According to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2/+bug/576255, I tried
what "serggt1" (post #6) suggested. For me, it complained about the
upwards dependency of the PHP5 mod:

xxxxxx/$ sudo dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq apache2.2-common
dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of apache2.2-common:
 libapache2-mod-php5 depends on apache2.2-common; however:
Package apache2.2-common is to be removed.
dpkg: error processing apache2.2-common (--purge):
 dependency problems - not removing
Errors were encountered while processing:
 apache2.2-common

Uninstalled PHP5 completelely and then tried the "dpkg --purge --force-
remove-reinstreq apache2.2-common" again. No complaints this time.

Then reinstalled apache2.2-common and then PHP5.

Looks like everything is OK now.
