Sorry, two more questions:

1. is there any other program which can make this happen?  Can you run
'xterm' or 'gnome-terminal' or 'xeyes' with no problem?  If not, then we
should probably mark this bug as affecting firefox as well.

2. exactly what happens on the client when it is misbehaving?
