sshd is running.
ps ax | grep ssh
  907 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -D

What I noticed is that on other machines where I'm able to login his is the output:
ps ax | grep ssh
  907 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -D
 1774 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/bin/ssh-agent /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session

As you can see there's also the ssh-agent which doesn't come out on the
other server.
