Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

update-rc.d only manages System V style init scripts - the smbd and nmbd
services in Ubuntu are managed by upstart so this won't work.

/etc/init.d/smbd|nmbd is just a symbolic link to upstart-job and is
provided for legacy compatibility.

To disable upstart configurations from starting automatically please
follow:

http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#disabling-a-job-from-automatically-
starting
