Public bug reported:

2012-03-31 - after latest upgrades MySQL refused to start.  It always
complained about

    mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!

or some other error related to /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock.

Attempts to purge/reinstall mysql have failed, as have
permission/ownership changes to /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
