thanks, very interesting.  lxc depends on bridge-utils, so my guess is
that your custom kernel actually does not support bridges.

Just to be sure, could you please show the result of

dpkg -l | grep bridge

and attach your /boot/config-* for your kernel version?

 status incomplete
