Thanks for reporting this bug.  Can you describe what modifications you've
made to your memcached installation?

I believe the source of your problem is that /etc/init.d/memcached is
actually the /usr/bin/memcached ELF binary, when it is supposed to be
sysvinit bash script.  It looks like when init is calling
(as root) /etc/init.d/memcached to start or stop the memcached binary,
it is actually calling the ELF binary itself.  The binary refuses.
Removing the /etc/init.d/memcached file and reinstalling the package
should work around this.
