This problem goes away if I replace the UTF-8 character in the prompt to
an ASCII character e.g. '>'.

BTW, this problem exist in the latest ubuntu as well (using zsh).

λ ~ →    byobu -v
byobu version 5.92
tmux 1.9
λ ~ →
