The same problem happen on 14.04.2 with 3.16 kernel:

ubuntu at ubuntu14042:~$ smbclient -L localhost -U root
Enter root's password:
protocol negotiation failed: NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT
ubuntu at ubuntu14042:~$ uname -a
