This is a userspace tool and we certainly would not expect there to be
any differences in the behavior as a result of running on an earlier
kernel.  However, there have been stable release updates (including
security updates) for samba in the 14.04 series, so it's probably worth
checking whether this problem is reproducible when installing an earlier
version of the samba and smbclient packages.
