9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly exits with segfault signal

This is the bug Bryce and Sergio worked at. The PPA version with the fix
Sergio proposed crashed again, this time with very different backtrace.

I couldn't find reports of similar crashes.

I'm not sure on how to proceed here, so I tagged the bug (again) as
server-triage-discuss.
