Those fairs are usually conducted and organised by the student society. We do not need direct participation in the induction 'cause they are usually induction camp for their own society or department. However, there are also some bazaar fair ongoing during sept till say nov (i can't remember the exact dates) and there are chances where people can set up stores (I suppose that needs a student to register). I didn't know that NP gives out software freely to students. That wasn't the case in NUS maybe even in NTU. That's why I didn't aware the highly 'unpopular' choice in NP. Companies giving out goodies do not need special arrangement with the department but of course if that does, the organisers will get the necessary permit. So far, I don't realise there is unless you are putting a bomb in the goodie. Money wise, well, goodies will be the 'money' contribution. For example, I got some mouse pads last time by Ministry of Health and chocolates from a distributor. For the fair, we might need to pay a fee to get a store set up and of course man hour/arrangements/ etc will cost. Also if we produce a localised 'manual' to attach to the goodie, printing will cost. So CD/DVD itself will not cost at the moment but any associated stuff might cost abit and we do need to find funding in such cases. In the engineering faculty, people tend to use alot of C++ as their key programming language. I think Linux has a couple of good compilers for that and I think it is also good that people can try Python in some sense. We also need alot of Matlab and that was used to be accomplished by either use remote servers in NUS or hmm trying to get some 'source'. So I think Octave might be a good option (of course for the more advanced), there is still abit of incompatibility in some areas like plotting. How about we can start off with this society?http://compclub.nus.edu.sg/ - I found it from the NUS website and it is directly under the Student Union.http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/eir/students/student_engineering_club.html - Engineering clubs.http://liquidify.prettyskies.org/chess/about.html - Chemical Engineering Club (you might contact under marketing/O-day (Orientation)http://www.enginclub.nus.edu.sg/committees.html - General Engineering ClubI think in NTU, there should be something similar and well people from NTU can help out in that bit.I can understand how tough it is to distribute CD at Orchard road. Well we will have to try. Any suggestion how shall we put the How-tos together systematically on our site? Do we do something similar to ubuntuguide? or we update the ubuntuguide and have a link to them? 'cause i think How-tos do help me alot in the past and I certainly would like to have a easy direction to find my solution.Cheers. I can help out anything online with my free time but sad to say I can't be present in events.Harris
