Can't reboot

Thank you for your response;
I cannot reboot from terminal. It does the same thing as rebooting from
the gui. I read the thread you sent, and it seems my problem is slightly
different; nothing freezes, and the gui goes away, I just get stuck with
a black screen, OR it will get to the splash screen of the bios and just
hang there.
I've also already tried to reconfigure X - still have no luck. I will
try again, if need be, but tell me this, after I backup my current
Xorg.conf - if it screws up, how do I replace it back on top of the
"new(broken)" one?
Thanks for your help,
Tipton

Here is something similar to your problem:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=463100
Can you reboot from terminal?
1. Open terminal - Alt+Ctrl+F1
2. Login
3. Reboot: "sudo shutdown -r now" - will ask your passwd.
If you can, then there is something wrong with X/Gnome. But it will be
really hard to say what.
You also can try to re-configure your X like this:
"sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" - just follow the questions.
But before that take backup for your working X!
"sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf xorg.conf.backup"
Best Regards Asmo Koskinen.
