I use the index value in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

i.e. with an integrated ac97 chipset and an RME HDSP Multiface :
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
options snd-hdsp index=1

So upon reboot, my integrated soundchip is always first and my
professional soundcard comes second.
