What's the reason to make your own kernel? Some odd and rare hardware?

I'm using Alessio's realtime kernel on my both working horses - laptop 
and desktop with all the goodies (wlan, bluetooth, usb, midi-keyboard 
(m-audio keystation 49e), firewire with Kino/dvgrab etc etc).
