You can check if the real time kernel is installed in a few different ways.  
The quickest method would probably be to type 'uname -r' into a terminal  
and see what it tells you. If the kernel name ends with rt, then you've got  
it. You can also use Synaptic Packager Manager and search for the linux-rt  
package to see if that's installed.

Either way, I don't think the lack of a real time kernel would be the  
source of your problem. Other people on this list have mentioned that video  
editing under Jaunty seems to be slower, but I don't recall if it was  
determined why. I've never done video editing, so I'm of no use to you  
there. Sorry!
