You need some sort of synthesizer to generate actual wave forms. Most
midi that I get is for a piano or electronica synth. I use qsynth for
the piano (I have a nice sounding piano soundfont), for electronica
synths I may use zynaddsubfx, ams, or my micro-korg via the midi out on
my sound card. For drums I will likely pass the midi to hydrogen for
rendering (I like the hydrogen editor, so I will often edit the drum
midi track in hydrogen)
There are a lot of options here.
