cannot compile current rt kernel

I installed Karmic studio on my machine the other day. 
Like Jaunty, the rt kernel did not work -- it froze almost immediately. 

In Jaunty, that was not a problem for me. I just dropped to root, installed the generic kernel, and then compiled my own rt kernel from the latest sources. 

Well, that doesn't work any more. The latest rt kernel does not compile, at least using old-config. There were a list of new options, and I chose the default option for each one. 

Has anyone else tried compiling the latest rt kernel on Karmic? And what are their results?

I used patch 2.6.29.4-rt16 from 
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/

and linux 2.6.29.4 from 
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/
