pardon, I didn't read the complete thread, so just 2 cents.

spinymouse at ubuntu:/boot$ cat config-$(uname -r) | grep ACER
CONFIG_ACER_WMI=m

'lsmod | grep acer' to see if the modul is loaded, perhaps it's called
acerhk or acer_acpi, but acer_wmi.
