Thanks, Alex. I'm off on slightly different tack here. I do have a
laptop that runs Linux, but I need to build a desktop system and need
recommendations on a good motherboard and CPU combination for it.

I can do recording with my laptop, no problem. I need to build a
multi-purpose desktop system which will take my M-Audio card, a 3ware
RAID card and other hardware which I need for all the various things I
intend to use it for.

In fact, having built a number of Linux systems, I can testify that you
don't want to run it on bleeding edge hardware. Many makers of hardware
have proprietary APIs for their stuff, and it often takes Linux
developers a while to document them and write drivers and programs to
work with them. I have many times had to disable NICs, RAID controllers
or integrated sound cards on state-of-the-art MBs because they weren't
yet supported in Linux.

I'm way beyond you, buddy. I need to support diagrams (dia), OpenOffice
for PDFs, ODFs, DOCs, spreadsheets and the like, evolution for email and
more. These are basic requirements. Google docs won't cut it :-)

The box will be running ardour2, jackd, audacity, and several other
linux studio apps., but will need to do a variety of other jobs as well.
