Display going strange after update

I am using Ubuntu Studio 12.04 and recently after installing updates, 
the display is not looking so good. When I switch program windows or 
scroll a document or web page, often there is tearing or parts of the 
image disappearing.

The graphics card is an AMD Radeon Sapphire, and I am using the open 
source driver (the proprietary driver would not work properly for me).

Anyone else having this problem?

The kernel is  Linux 3.2.0-39-lowlatency
64-bit
