I have the same bug with Empathy 3.4.2 on Ubuntu. 
You could see that we have a notification. (Super_ded at gmail.com aimerait savoir si vous êtes en ligne, we can translate: Super_dede at gmail.com wish to know if you are on line).
May be the french translation is no goog, but with this notification is a question. Are you agree to let Super-deeede know you are on line ?

Expected: Add a bouton: yes or no
Or change the notification
