Hi,
Not sure that this is what you need, but it worked for me--that is, I avoided all hassle with creating pointers in Grub:
I made a "Gparted.live" CD from the code I downloaded from http://gparted.sourceforge.net/. It creates the needed pointers for Grub.   Sourceforge is a reputable US open source code site.
