[ubuntu-uk] video convertion

I wonder if anyone can help me. I am trying to find some software which
will convert video files from one format to another especially from
quicktime to .avi or .jpg. Also, I need to able to convert video files
produced on a digicam to .avi. There is no problem doing this with
windows software free to download but, so far, I have been unable to
find the equivalent which will work with Ubuntu. Further, I am not very
good at using a terminal but I will if I have to.

I will happily explain, in detail, to any one who may be interested,
what I am trying to do and why. Suffice it to say I can do all I need
under widows for free.
