all as one word, rather than start x

But yes, see what happens. If the live cd only works in a safe mode, then it 
could be something strange about your system causing the problem. What is 
your monitor resolution and type (e.g 1024x768  TFT monitor)? Also, what 
graphics card do you have (make and model).
