[ubuntu-uk] two versions of ubuntu. Can I fix one with the other?

Hello, Farran.

You sometimes end up running Busybox when the module libraries for e.g. 
ext3 are not accessible to the kernel you've just booted. This means 
that no ext3 filesystems can be mounted by the kernel you're running!

One thing I've discovered the hard way is that the Ubuntu installer does 
not always get it right unless you install to the first hard drive...

I recomment booting the 'live' CD to find out what has gone wrong, 
because it's a lot easier to use than last-ditch attempts to bring your 
system back using busybox (good though Busybox as a last resort!).
