I was about to say the same thing :-)

Apart from the many other valid reasons why HTML email is a "bad idea" (see 
http://www.tcrlist.com/Configuring_Plain_Text.htm as a start...), I often 
read email on my phone, which does not like unnecessary tags in emails taking 
up both extra screen and memory...

Might you be able to configure your email client to send plain text?
