I have vmware player installed, in my experience using the package from
vmware[1] has a higher success rate. I used the source package from
vmware's website in my case: VMware-player-2.0.1-55017.x86_64.tar.gz the
ran the vmware-install.pl script
I think you will need the package build-essential installed before you
run the install script for the script to compile the kernel module.
[1] http://www.vmware.com/download/player/player_reg.html (you have to
enter some details annoyingly)

Michael
