Sounds a bit like a problem with an extension.
Try creating a new profile and using that. IIRC, you have to shut down
all firefox instances (killall firefox) and then start the profile
manager (firefox -P). Both of those commands can either be typed in a
terminal, or using Alt-F2 to display the Run Application prompt.
If it stops it crashing, you need to disable all your extensions and
find out which one is causing the crashes (which can take a while,
depending on how many you have installed).
