No - on the Brother, re-installation of the two packages that form the
SANE wrapper and driver does the trick.  I took a look at the packages.
There is a script that modifies /etc/sane.d/dll.conf so without looking
any deeper, I guess one of the updates I did must have replaced that.
Next time it happens I'll look a bit more carefully.  I don't remember
seeing a SANE update - but if there was one, that would be it.

I emphasize, there isn't a problem - I just want to find out from
interest what caused the temporary loss of scanner .....

I've just now had a call to ask if I can help get an HP combined printer
scanner working.  That's another interesting one.  I'll get to see her
end of next week.  There seems to be lots of information on the forum,
so once I find out what model this is, I'll have a go ......
