It says this on Lightning's add-on page:
Lightning 1.0 beta5 is the latest *stable release* built for Thunderbird 5
and Thunderbird 6 and contains 150 bugfixes and improvements over the 1.0b2
release, that improve the add-on's stability, performance and memory
consumption.
so it isn't built for Thunderbird 3. Thunderbird 6 is stable so I would
consider upgrading to that.
