I've been looking around - and am now more confused than ever!  I think 
if I can find a CUPS driver, I may be able to use my existing ppd defs 
file.  Can you point me in a direction?  Also, I notice that Brother 
supply driver source code under a gnu licence, but having looked at the 
source, I'm not at all sure where to start.  Is there a beginners guide 
to CUPS drivers that I might be able to start with?
