Oh, well. It will still be good as a backup machine, I suppose. And 
maybe someone will find a way to outwit the firmware. I assume the 
people who have manually resized the partitions and created new ones for 
Ubuntu and its swap space, have achieved this. Their idea would be to 
fool the firmware into loading Ubuntu without realising what it was. 
Anyway, I'm going to pack it in for the night; I seem to have been 
wrestling with it practically non-stop for 30 hours or so. Thanks for 
all the suggestions. Doubtless this will be a useful warning for others 
who might assume they could convert new Windows machines to Ubuntu in a 
straightforward way.
