[Ubuntu-US-CA] echo issue on Ubuntu 12.04

Sorry folks I had a brain fade when I wrote this and the issue is on a
newly installed Ubuntu 12.04 DELL machine.

The analogue microphone comes through the speakers.   Therefor we are
getting feedback even
with no program using audio running.   I have looked around at "Sound
Settings" but don't see anyway to fix
this issue.   Of course muting the microphone works or turning down the
speaker volume but that
is a non-solution.

I had these issues occasionally years ago with alsa and knew how to fix it
but not with pulse.

Anyone else had this issue and solved it?     Advise, gladly received.
