[Ubuntu Chicago] Tech support related question

Well...since I am unable to start a new topic on the tech support forums
(great way to make it look like we have a perfect product here BTW...no bugs
reported...no issues...heheh), I am going to ask it  here...if I can.
 
I have 6.10 server installed.  I had the KDE interface installed, but the
kdelibs package and kdesvn package became broken.  I tried reinstalling the
libs package to no avail, so I removed the kubuntu desktop and tried to
reinstall it via apt-get.  Well I have been trying this for a few days
(today is day number 3)  It looks like it s dl'g from the Argonne
repository.  It keeps timing out on the gets for some of the packages,, so
the entire installation procedure ends up failing.  I also tried getting it
to get the kubuntu-desktop package from the disk and even after using
apt-cdrom to get apt to recognize the cd...it says it can't find it.  The
draw from Argonne is going very slow (about 1.5-4 kBps) and I am on 1.5/768
DSL connection.  The current apt-get session was started around 2am this
morning and it is still going (13.5 hours later).  Is there an easier way
for me to restore the kubuntu desktop (or ubuntu for that matter...I have
the same problems with hat as well...I tried that as well to see if gnome
would be any quicker since it is lighter weight than KDE) without having to
totally reinstall the OS?  HELP!
 
I am running this as a dev server on a Intel 2.2, 512MB ram, 40g/60g/300g
drives
