I installed 3 new 7.04 based machines today (and upgraded about 5 others)
and 1 of them had a interesting problem. It was a quad-CPU AMD
Alienware box
and when I installed the live-cd version of ubuntu, the desktop never
fully came up. X11 initialized just fine and I could drop
into the console and point a xterm at the display at it worked fine.
In the end, I ran ubiquity directly from the xterm and it came up
fine under X11 and we finished the install.
Well, after the reboot into the real version of the OS, what did I find
but the desktop did not initialize correctly
under the real OS as well. I then installed kubuntu-desktop and under
kde, everything was fine
Interestingly enough, the other 2 machines, using the same CDROM, had no
issues. The ONLY difference was
they were Intel Xeon 5160 CPU's instead of AMD CPU's
Anybody else ever see anything like this?
