[Ubuntu Chicago] Suggestions.

Hi,
    I am very, very new to Ubuntu.  A friend of mine installed it on my computer and so far, with the exception of a few issues, I like it.  However,  a week ago, my computer was updating the Ubuntu 8.10 GUI, I messed up the update.  Now all I get is the initial login screen that shows my user name and password.  All of my data--thank goodness--is still there, but I can only access anything through the terminal.  Is there a way to re-install the GUI from a cd, via the terminal?  Any help, suggestions, advice that you can offer will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
