With regards to exim(4) ... I have been cheating a bit here.
It IS possible to use a the much simpler exim3 single configuration
file with exim4 until you can get your head around the new, more
powerful mutifile (and directory) configuration syntax.
Just take a working exim 3 /etc/exim/exim.conf
and copy it to
/etc/exim4/exim4.conf
kick exim4 (sudo /etc/init.d/exim4 restart)
and test away... my old exim3 files generraly have worked with no changes.
