This makes a lot of sense.  I had a Panesonic DVDRW stop burning on me just
after it was old enough not to be able to take it back to the store for
exchange, and I never did get around to sending it back to the manufacturer
to get it replaced.  It still (after several years) reads CDs and DVDs just
fine.
