[CoLoCo] Front Range Users of Geospatial Open Source?

That would be a hard market to break into...ESRI, the maker of ArcGIS is
pretty much an industry standard, and until recently was pretty much
hard-wired into Windows. ESRI recently made some changes to one of their
file standards (called a geodatabase), which basically was a fancy MS Access
file. Now they have their own independent file system, which has
drastically decreased file size (sometimes as much as 60%), improved
performance, and made it platform independent. (insert you own anti-M$, Gee
whiz comment here). They are supposedly in the process of building Linux
and Mac versions for their next big release...which is very good; not as
good as open source, but at least it's a move away from a Windows-only
program..baby steps I guess... It's very expensive software, but it does
some pretty amazing things, things I haven't figured out to do in
GRASS<http://grass.itc.it/>and
QGIS <http://www.qgis.org/>, the open source counterparts...

I've messed around with GRASS and QGIS, but the GUIs and nomenclature are so
different it's hard to make the switch...plus working for the government
doesn't help much, and they are way into everything M$...

It's something I wanted to mess with a bit more on my own PC, but just
haven't had the time (yes, I realize this is a common excuse :-) )
