So the desktop in Ubuntu is actually Gnome.  So that means Compiz is 
just another implementation of Gnome developed by another OSS group.  
Similar to the difference between Mozilla and SeaMonkey, right?

That I didn't know.  Regular old Gnome looks very different from Compiz 
so I had no idea they were pretty much the same.
