My machine is 5 years old. Its a 1.6GHz AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with 1GB of
PC2700 RAM and an 8x AGP Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 card with 256MB of DDR
Video RAM and Compiz Fusion runs as smooth as a baby's bottom even when
I have a lot of programs running and when I'm playing a video.

I say switch to an Nvidia card, they support OpenGL much better than ATI
cards currently do and are typically faster cards also.
